How to Prep a Garden for Spring

The first day of Spring has just passed, so you need to know how to prep a garden for Spring! Gardening should be a hobby that brings you joy, and peace, and creates a grounding feeling for your soul. Garden prep for Spring should not feel overwhelming in the slightest. To begin the planning process it is important to take into consideration all aspects that can affect your garden. We all have an idea of what our dream garden would look like- perhaps something like Floret or Farmluxe; but, that can be a goal to work toward once you have some gardening experience under your tool-belt. Keep in mind that every season you can add more to your garden. Just do what feels right for your budget, physicality, and time allowances.

We are all familiar with the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of any planning process. Your garden needs these same questions answered so that you are best able to plan for your beautiful blooms.

  • Who will the garden benefit?

  • What purpose is your garden going to serve?
  • What are the soil conditions?
  • What are the light conditions?
  • What pests or wildlife do you have that will be detrimental to your garden?

  • When are you going to tend to your garden?
  • When do you want it ready by?

  • Where are you going to set up your garden?
  • Where are your low spots or places that hold a lot of excess water?
  • Where is the nearest water source?
  • Where is the nearest power source?
  • Is there underground piping or wires to be cautious of?
  • Is there high wind? – Do you need a wind break?

The answers to these questions can help you brainstorm the process of building your garden. The answers to these questions take into account all of the aspects to beginning and maintaining your garden. It is crucial in your garden prep for Spring that you do not bite off more than you can chew. Start small and manageable to ensure that you don’t get too overwhelmed. You can always add more beds, start more seeds, and harvest more crop. But if you do too much at one time, it can be too overwhelming. We all start somewhere, and you are going to love the joy that home-grown blooms, veggies, or fruits can bring!
